Win2k changes ntfs version of mounted drives

I use HDD carriers to routinely back up and restore hard
drive images for use on machines running winNT4.

The problem is that if I allow win2K to mount the drive
after the image is restored, it changes the NTFS version
to 3.0 and the chkdisk and defrag utilities will refuse to
run in the target machine.

Is there some way to prevent win2K from doing the
conversion to all mounted drives?

I understand that it's normal for win2K to upgrade drives
during install, and that the winNT4 utilities are behaving
in a correct manner when confronted with an unknown file
system.
