WIN2000 system reboots by itself every 24 hours?

Hi,

I upgraded a Win98 system to Win2000 to eliminate constant system
freezing in Win98.

After install, all seemed well for a couple of weeks. But at some
point, the computer seems to have started rebooting itself every 24
hours at 3:11 AM and ended up with the active desktop recovery screen.

I say "seems" because I am always asleep at 3:11AM, but my wife and
son tell me they hear the windows start up music every night at
3:11AM.

I ended up reformatting the hard drive as part of a WIN2000
reinstall, and installed Office 2000, Winzip, Paint Shop Pro, AOL,
and AOL Instant Messenger.

The problem still occurs.

I installed Norton Antivirus and found no virus on the system.

No programs are running when this happens.

I check the power settings and set them all to never shut down.

I have Internet Explorer Version 6.0.2600.0000 128 bit.

Does anyone have any idea what could be happening with this system?

Thanks
CW

Sounds like a hardware problem. Time to play detective:

- Disconnect your PC from the network and from the Internet.
Does the problem still occur at the same time?
- Advance the clock by some 6 hours. Still same time?
- Turn off the PC for several hours before you go to bed,
then turn it on. This gives you an indication if you're
dealing with an overheating CPU.
- You might have a power glitch at 03:11. Stay up one
night so that you can see for yourself.
- Get into the BIOS before you go to bed, and leave the PC
there. If the PC reboots itself regardless then the problem
has nothing to do with Win2000.
- Check your tasks in the Task Scheduler (via the Control Panel).

And yes, turn off those speakers so that you won't wake up your
family with the Microsoft sound!

Sounds like you have a scheduled task going off every night and that task is
causing a blue screen and your machine is rebooting.

Examine the system event log entries for events from source Save Dump and
post the hexadecimal numbers from that event message here.

Thank you.
I did not know about the event log.
I checked it and found that each morning at 3:05 AM, Windows would
install the same Feb 23, 2002, windows update, then restart the
computer at 3:11 AM. Now, I just have to figure out why this update
wants to keep reinstalling.

Thank you very much for this step by step diagnostic procedure.
At this point, however, it looks like it might actually be a software
issue related to a windows update that reinstalls itself every morning
at 3:05 AM, and then calls for a windows restart.

I hope to figure out why this is happening and make it stop.

In any case, your response and Matt's response were extremely helpful.

Thanks again.
