win2000 server initial VPN setup...

I plan on conecting the server to a Linksys Router for the
internet connection.

1. I run the routing and remote access server setup.
2. Choose the VPN server option
3. At the screen where it says "specify the internet
connection that this server uses." There are 2 choices in
the list.
a. <no internet connection>
b. local area connection 3com ethernet, 192.168.1.104
(DHCP)

When I try to choose local area connection, a window pops
up that says "You have chosen the last available
connection as the internet connection. a VPN server
requires that one connection be used as the private
network connection."

What am I supposed to do here?
Thanks anyone, I'm new at this learning one step at a time.
I am going to practice directly connecting to the internet
in the mean time till I get an answer.

Hi,
I guess we need some more information. Do you intend to terminate VPN client
connections on your server? If that is not the case you don't want to enable
VPN server option.
From the description it looks like you have only one network interface and
that's why you got the error message. Typically a VPN server would have more
than 1 network interface.

The standard setup is to have one NIC on the private LAN and one connected
to the Internet. If you already have an Internet connection through a
router, you can use this as your public interface and configure RRAS server
with one NIC as the remote access server. Forward tcp port 1723 from the
router to the RRAS server. Try connecting over the Internet to the router's
public interface.

In short, the need of the two NICs are
One NIC for remote access, one NIC for the routing.

However if you want only remote access you could you incoming connections as
well. More information about "Incoming connections" can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/2ndlvl_networking.asp
under "VPN and incoming connections" node.

Thanks,
Sharoon

In a case like this it is best to NOT use the VPN server option. Set up
using the remote access option. Test the config by connecting to the RRAS
server's LAN IP from another LAN machine.

When this works, forward PPTP from the router to the RRAS server (as
Sharoon suggested) and try connecting from the Internet to the router's
public IP. The port forwarding should extend the connection to the RRAS
server.

I wish to access our office network using a VPN connection.
Our current configuration is all pc's are connected to
the internet using a LInksys router. We also have a server
on the network running windows server 2000.

I guess my question is CAN I setup a VPN using Win 2000
server using one NIC card, or does it REQUIRE that I use 2
nic cards?

If it IS possible to do it using ONE nic then how do I get
past the screen at Remote Access setup that says:

1. I run the routing and remote access server setup.
2. Choose the VPN server option
3. At the screen where it says "specify the internet
connection that this server uses." There are 2 choices in
the list.
a. <no internet connection>
b. local area connection 3com ethernet, 192.168.1.104
(DHCP)
When I try to choose local area connection, a window pops
up that says "You have chosen the last available
connection as the internet connection. a VPN server
requires that one connection be used as the private
network connection."

My intention is to create a VPN server NOT terminate if
that means what I think it does.
