I hope this is the right newsgroup to ask.

I have a computer with Windows XP (SP2). I want to buy a new computer
with Vista. I want to transfer everything, and they will both be on a
local network. I want to make the new computer be like the old one,
including the software I've installed and even desktop icons. Is
there an easy way to do that (i.e. without having to re-install all of
the software on the new computer)?

X-post to Vista Installation_Setup newsgroup.

You can transfer most of your data and settings to the new machine but not
the applications, Jud.

Currently there is no reliable way to transfer all the software to the new
system. Personally I would never consider trying to migrate today's
complicated apps from one OS to another. There are enough issues just
getting Vista to run with all the different hardware. Apps should be
installed from original media.

Vista comes with Windows Easy Transfer, WET, which will migrate data and
settings but not apps. There is also a Windows Easy Transfer Companion,
WET-C, which is an MS program in Beta for transferring programs. WET has
had it's share of problems and successes, but I have seen few posts on
WET-C, and none where the OP was successful. Here are some links for WET
and WET-C. WET is on the Vista DVD. WET-C is a download.

Lastly there are Vista specific newsgroups where you should be asking these
questions.

By "settings", you mean the Windows options (fonts, etc)?

That can ONLY be accomplished by performing an upgrade on an existing
system.

Your situation obviously doesn't apply.

Yes, well last year I had a HD die. I had a "complete backup", but
that didn't put my system back the way it was. The data was there,
but not the apps. And I have a large number of apps. I had been
holding off for Vista before I got a new computer, but I decided to
get a new computer instead (Win XP), since I couldn't wait for Vista.
I literally spent _weeks_ getting most of my apps installed on the new
computer. I still don't have all of them. I'd like to get a new Core
2 duo with Vista, but I dread spending weeks reloading apps again.

Now the power supply died in my old computer (that my child uses, and
I have for stand by), and I'm wondering about whether to put a new
power supply in it or get a new Vista system and make my current
system the standby/child system. Tough decision.

Thank all of you for the help.

Look for 2 programs.........Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Vista which uses
a 2 way USB cable and MS software..Easy Transfer companion
and.....Laplinks PCmover for Windows Vista which is the program and it comes
with a bi-directional USB 2.0 cable.
PC World just did a review of them and the PCmover was a little better
....but neither program moved all of the applications. The transfer of 27gb of
info took 3.5 hours......

I think in that time you might be able to install your apps from scratch??
