Win XP Sp2 firewall issue

T

Thomas Jones

From Tom:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is expected to be released in a few days
(from August 7, 2004). It is also said to have its firewall set to
"ON," as the default option.

However, I already have a firewall, ZoneAlarm, and I want to use that,
instead of using Microsoft's firewall. Question: How do I disable
Microsoft's firewall? My computer is not on a LAN; it is a standalone
machine which connects to my ISP directly through a modem.

When you install Service Pack 2 it should have the
options to turn it off show up when you reboot your
computer, or you can find them later under the Security
Center Section of the Control Panel.

As my understanding, WinXP SP2 firewall will "automatically" disable if it
detects a third party firewall on the computer, and vice versa.
Interestingly, it's always ON when the system is booting, and will turn off
until it detects another firewall. This means your computer is always
protected by two kinds of firewall, before and after the system boots into
Windows.

Not really correct.
The Internet Connection Firewall is enabled upon installation.

When I installed SP2 this morning, it detected that I have Zone Alarm Pro
installed, and did not activate the Windows Firewall. I was also pleased to
see that unlike SP2RC1 or SP2RC2, the RTM version of SP2 recognised that I
have an anti-virus program, F-Prot, installed.

This is from the SP2 CD (downloaded from MSDN last night), but I don't think
that the express install would be any different.

Tom:

Leave it enabled.

MS is now suggestion that two firewalls may be ok.
This is something some of us have been doing for several years without
problems

I am running SP2 RTM with XP's firewall and ZA free v5.1.011 both enabled
without problems

SP2 RTM sees AVG v6 free on my setup

it has a Control Panel applet which allows you to configure it,
including turning it off.

As you said, disable ZoneAlarm (and Antivirus software) during the install.
You should do this anyway so they don't interfere with the install.
There is no need to enable the XP firewall before installation of SP2.

After you reboot, disable the XP firewall (it's only semi-useful since
it is only a one way firewall) in Control Panel.

I think firewall will be armed when you restart after upgrade. Pcworld has
an article and still likes the firewalls from norton etc. I think the xp
firewall will only protect in data only and not outgoing data. Norton will
firewall both ways.

There is no need to firewall 'outgoing' if you have a good incoming firewall.
There are all kinds of reasons to use a firewall that monitors
outgoing traffic, oh top poster. For example, it lets you know if
one of the spiffy programs you downloaded and installed is calling
home every time you run it.
