CD was purchased under student program perhaps 3 years(?) ago.
Now when I wemt to repair the OS I find that the version is so old I cannot
repair unlest I reinstal everything. I also cannot access any of the 'Perform
additional tasks' This is a genuine MS cd. Does MS exchange defective XP
install CD's?

Why is the CD 'defective'?
All you said is that you 'cannot repair unlest you reinstall everything'...

Sounds like someone needs to slipstream (integrate) SP2 into the CD...
(Google for that.)

Thank you for your prompt and cogent response. I DL'd and installed
msrdpcli.exe and all is correct now. Thanks again in pointing me in the right
direction.
