Win XP Pro boot problem

Hi all

I had a recent problem with a HDD failure so I bought a new 160Gb HFD and
did a clean install.

I ran the WinXP pro upgrade disk and supplied the orignal WinXP home as
validation for the upgrade and the install appeared to go fine.

However, when i reboot the system i get to the dell logo with the option to
hit F2 or F12. It seemss to be hanging so i hit F12.

I then select option 1 normal boot and then i get a c omment somehting like
primary drive not recognized hit f1 to continue or f2 to run setup.

If i hit F1 it contnues and boots win xp pro as you would expect.

When i added the new HDD i didnt have any drivers with the hardware, its a
maxtor IDe drive, and unless a driver was installed as part of the XP
installation then there isnt a specific driver on the system.

The bios sees both this and another HDD, the new drive is set as the master
and the other as a slave by jumpers on the HDD itself.

Is this liley a BIOS problem ir is it something to do with the disk manager
in WinXP?

Oh nearly forgot, when i formatted the new drive i wasnt asked about
partitions and so not sure if i need to partition the drive or somehting like
that to solve the porblem.

Any ideas greatfully recevied

thanks

Glenn

if you had a hdd failure then chuck that drive out,its no good.put the single
pin back on your new hdd and do a fresh install on the 160 gig.the old drive
has a natural patition on the xp software disk and you usaly only create
another when you have re xped your pc and set it up then you can acctualy
creat several partitions on the new drive.one once the pc is up and
running.or take the old drive out and re xp the new drive as the primary.then
move the pins on both drives to make the new one master then the old one a
slave, reconnect the old drive, always have pc turned off when you do this as
you can short the hdds and brake them if pc is turned on.then boot your pc up
go to control pannel, performance and maintanance, administrators tools, then on
to computer management.go to storage click on it then click on disk
management.click on storage then on disk management.on the right you should
see both drives listed?if d is missing then it is broke so you will just have
to remove it and throw it away.if d is listed right click on it then click on
format.the d drive is now ready for storage only and will appear empty on
defrag untill you store your music or files in there.all programme files must
be stored on c drive now as thats the master drive.
