Win XP only recognizing 3.5GB out of 4GB RAM

I recently installed 4-1GB DDR 400 Dimms in a P4 3.2GHz
machine. BIOS recognizes it, Belarc Advisor recognizes it,
and pretty much any other utility I've used recognizes it.
However, Win XP Pro System Properties' General tab and the
task manager's performance tab report only 3.5 GB.

Is there a limit to the amount of RAM XP will recognize?

Is the video card built into the motherboard or is it a separate AGP / PCI
card?

Built-in video card can share manin RAM memory for use as video RAM.

Under the boot.ini Mat type in the switch /3gb after /fastdetect. See what
that does. I don't think
XP will give you exactly 4GB because it uses
some of the ram for other things.

Yves,

That is one MEAN built in video card! heh 512MB built in video card?!

There is a limit of 4GB, Matthew, however, I know some people have reported
this "reporting" issue previousl. Do a google groups search. =)

FYI - the 3GB switch takes 1GB from the OS and gives it to
applications - so instead of being 2 & 2, it becomes 3 & 1, and with
most systems (except CAD and scientific apps) you end up wasting the
extra 1 GB for applications, as they are written to only utilize 2GB -
so forget the 3GB switch.

Not sure which mobo you're using but if you have an intel ICH5 southbridge
your mobo will only show 3+ GB as the ICH5 uses the rest for resource
alocation. Check out your mobo manual or manufacturers web site. I'm not
sure about other chips.

I don't know what the problem is, I am just and admirer.
WOW what are you running with 3GB of RAM? 3dsmax, Maya,
about four games at once or the friggin memory eating
adobe premmier Pro 7, as well as Maya and 3dsmax.
Initially I thought you had a really old system and that
the 3.5GB was your harddrive.
Wow, you have probably got a radeon 9800, no, a FireGL
something or other haven't you. Am I envious? just a bit.

Maybe when windows XP was written it was never concieved
that 4GB of RAM would be a reqirement. Your Motherboard
must be pretty nice too to be able to utilise 4GB.
But what do you do with all this hardware. If its
wordprocessing I'll, I'll blow a gasket.

Maybe he uses it for a conversation starter. Maybe it is a
phallic symbol.

Maybe he just said to the world, "Why not, RAM is cheap."

LOL...just for the sake of this thread...the new AMD64 bit processor can
access up to several Terabytes of system RAM if the mobo can support it...I
can see some tech head buying one and putting insane amounts of RAM..

And there have been NT servers that had slots for 4GB (or more) RAM
for almost 10 years. I'm sure I've bought 64/128/256MB memory modules
at an effective cost of $1000/GB or more, lots of them when I was
configuring workstations for developers.

I have a hard time imagining the need for that much RAM for an average
user's system.... I have 1GB on my present machine, and it seems to be
more than adequate for anything I try to do.....

Gees, the days of 8MB ram has gone

8 MB is not enough just for video. My first computer had
16 KB.

Long gone, apparently.... But of course you cold note that I paid
about the same for this 1GB as I did for my original 8 MB of RAM back
in the dark ages... (not counting the 8088 machines... LOL)...

Seriously, I do not think I would want to try to run XP with less than
512MB of RAM... That would probably be sufficient for many people..
