Safely and being sure everything works? By a reinstall with the card reader
unhooked.

Otherwise you might be able to use SUBST to get some of the desired
results.. And there are web documents out there explaining how to change
the letter of your boot drive - but in my experience - if you have done very
little on the machine and want the assurance that it will not cause issues
down the line - reinstall.

What kind of 5 in One device do you have. If its one which consists of two
USB slots and an IBM Microdrive then it would seem to have installed Windows
to the latter.

In which case Loretta is right. Remove the card reader, install Windows XP
to your hard disk and then reinstall the card reader and wipe the old
Windows Installation.

No you can't effectively change it to C without a reinstall. However to do
that you need to disable the card reader. When XP installed it began looking
for drives large enough to install to . It saw the 5 card reader as "C",
"D", "E", "F", and "G" thus installing itself to the only drive large enough
to house it which is the hard drive and gave it letter "H" in the sequence.
Thousands of registry entries now point to "H" so even if you could change
the drive letter to "C" you will have problems.

You should be able to go into the BIOS and disable USB support. That ought
to prevent the BIOS from recognizing the usb drives your card reader uses.
Then do a clean reinstall XP and let it boot to the Desktop before you
re-enter the BIOS and re-enable the USB devices again. If you can't disable
USB support that way you might need to open the computer case and
temporarily disconnect the cable that runs from the mother board to the card
reader.

Just wanted to let you know; I repartitioned the harddrive and started over
with the card reader unpluged and all is well. The person that the computer
is going to is very new to computers and will be taking classes. Not having
the hd as C: would have been very confusing to her.
Thank you all
Loretta
