Win XP Install Fails Due to HDD Detection Problems

I've got a working Windows XP setup that's *really* old. I'm trying
to do a new install on a completely new HDD and I've got a BIOS that
supports booting to any drive I select. So, I've selected a fresh
drive for the install and begun the install using my old Win XP Pro
CD.

The install doesn't get very far. The install chokes just before I
get to the part where it asks which partition I want to install
everything to. I get a blue screen saying that XP install has been
stopped. It recommends that I try unplugging drives and suggests that
I've got a virus problem of some sort. I didn't write down the error
code (it was long).

So, XP appears to be choking on my HDDs and / or controller. Here's
my setup:

ASUS P5LD2
2 x 160MB Maxtor IDE drives on a Silicon Image Raid card
1 x 320 MB Western Digital SATA HDD
2 x 320 MB Seagate SATA HDD

I did the original install on another Motherboard but with the Raid
card installed. The MB is new, as are the 3 SATA drives.

I've tried changing the boot priority of the drives without any
success. It doesn't matter which drive I specify as the one to boot
to. I get the same blue screen & error.

Any suggestions?

maybe removing all harddrives
except one, the master will
help for the install.

double check your hd jumpers
and that is is connected to the
correct connector on the ribbon
cable..

if using a single hd still doesn't
wurk then it's likely the issue is
not fundamental.

You need to press F6 at the beginning of the installation routine and
supply the drive controller drivers on a floppy diskette. Pay close
attention when the setup begins, you will see a prompt at the bottom of
the screen telling you to "Press F6 to load SCSI/Raid Drivers..." you
only have a short time to press F6, if you miss the prompt you have to
restart the setup program again (reboot). You *must* supply the drivers
on a floppy diskette, the setup program will not accept them from any
other media source. The driver are the ones for the controller of the
drive on which you want to install Windows, the Silicon Image Raid card
*or* the SATA drivers for your motherboard.

Regarding all the drives, they work fine in my existing Win XP
install. All the drives show up and function fine. Also, all of 'em
show up in a Linux Ubuntu install I have. So, there doesn't appear to
be any problem with cables, jumpers, or other hardware setup.

Regarding drivers, what drivers am I supposed to supply? The drives
are standard SATA jobs and there aren't supposed to be any extra
drivers necessary.

I guess I could try finding the specific controller drivers for the MB
but that seems a bit odd. ASUS is pretty mainstream, though the MB is
really recent while the XP version on the CD is pretty old.

If the drive on which you want to install Windows is connected to a SATA
controller on the motherboard you will have to supply the driver for
that controller, it should be on your ASUS driver cd. If the drive is
on the Silicon Image Raid card then you must have gotten a diskette or
cd with that card.

If the old Windows XP CD is pre SP1 or SP2, you should slipstream SP2
into it, so Windows setup implements 48-bit LBA.

The best thing to do would be to remove/unplug all the drives except for one
of the 160 drives and do the install that way, then add them all back after
the install.
I'm not familiar with that MB, but sometimes drives over 120GB are a
problem.
If it won't install with a single 160GB drive, that may be part of the
problem.
