2 issues:

1. poss bad win xp security patch update or really clever
trojan that uses win xp update service - anybody else
seeing this?

2. how to get win xp to recognize programs already
existing on hd as well as get missing drivers - need help

background:
10/17/03 rcvd win xp update that 2 urgent security patches
were available. Downloaded and installed both patches.
Upon computer restart, win xp faulted, said config files
corrupted and to reinstall win xp he using the repair or r
feature. Tried win xp repair using "r" feature on Compaq
provided win xp cd which failed. Win xp restored but no
longer recognizes any programs on hd and several key
drivers including modem drivers (connexant) now missing.
Drivers are not on Compaq provided cds nor on system as
well. Before this incident, my Compaq Presario 3015 USP
2.4 GHZ P4 worked fine. Had updated win xp numerous times
with various patches as they showed up without
difficulty.

troubleshooting:

tried to find missing drivers on Compaq supplied cds and
on hd without luck using update drivers feature in device
manager.

tried to get win xp to recognize programs though install
programs in control panel without luck.

tried to communicate with both Compaq and MS about issues
via email, online help, and phone so far without luck.
(why am I not surprised.) The standard seems to be on web -
can't fnd support page, and on phone - sorry we're
experiencing system problems try again later.

Whatever help anybody can give, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill Espinosa

I know that when you do a repair install using the *retail* XP cdrom
it will go thru and check all windows settings, but leave all your
content and installed programs intact.
However, I have no idea about a Compaq "repair" - could be anything.
Some manufacturers re-image the harddrive.
If that's what it did, your stuff is probably gone.

Most users follow the procedure on 307545 to fix a bad
"config" file (something in the registry), but it's probably
too late for you.
