WIN XP does not display whole amount of RAM.

We recently bought a few Dell Precision 670s workstations. They came wtih 4
Gigs of RAM, the machine only sees 2815 MB of the whole total. We contacted
Dell, and they said that eventhough XP Pro is able to manage 4 Gigs of RAM,
it wont display it all due to the way the OS is designed (no details on this
from the tech). Does that mean that 1.2 Gigs or RAM is lost in limbo and
can't be used? Anyway, does anybody have an idea of what might be going on?
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

No, it means the system information presented by XP is incorrect, and it is
actually using the other ram.
