Win Media player not working?

I've downloaded and installed the windoze media player (v9.00.00.3008),
but it does not work properly. It was working fine before this.

The player starts, then freezes for about 30 seconds. Then it plays the
music/video. It seems to freeze everytime it stops playing or when it
starts to play something.

I tried to un-install it and install it from scratch again, but its still
not working. I've also got the latest microsoft updates for this program
too.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this? or any info regarding other good
shareware/freeware media playing programs?
