Win Fax and Scan Set up

B

BillG

I have the vista premium and I'm trying to set up the win fax for cable,
through comcast in spokane wa. I have three fax pending and not sent. It says
that I have to set it up on the server. I have no clue about setting it up,
and I am the system admin on my personal computer. The other issue is the
dialing rules do not work. I do not want the win fax to dial +1 for a local
number.

Looks like two things are confused here. If you are suing WinFax for cable,
I assume you are trying to get to a network FAX server someplace. You will
need to identify one, get an account and configure WinFax accordingly. If
you are having a +1 problem, this is a dial-up issue, inconsistent with your
cable and network provider situation. In this case you are trying to use a
direct dial connect to another FAX machine. In this case you need to locate
your dialing properties and find boxes that show the exceptions on when not
to use the +1.

Why would you try to use a fax program over cable? Fax uses analog phone
lines. Always has. Always will. Clarify what you are trying to do.

There are many network providers that now offer FAX service via internet.
You send the file to them and they do the final step, make the local phone
call and deliver the FAX. All automated of course. Particularly popular
for international calls. Doesn't tie up your phone line and you are off a
lot faster. "Used to always be, now it's not" Time marches on. ;-)

Has absolutely nothing to do with Vista's Fax and Scan which only works over
an analogue phone line.

Not in the least. OP was asking about Windows Fax and Scan, which like all
fax software can only work over analog phone lines. Internet Fax services
are not in play here and it is misleading and confusing to suggest that they
are. Please pay attention to the topic when you reply.

To send and receive faxes using a server
Before you begin, make sure that your computer is connected to the network.
Also, make sure that you know the network address of the fax server (for
example, \\mycompanyfaxserver) and that you have permission to connect to
it. To obtain permission or to obtain the fax server address, contact a
system administrator.

1. Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax
and Scan.
2. To use Fax view, at the bottom of the left pane, click Fax.
3. Click Tools, and then click Fax Accounts.
4. Click Add, and then, in the Fax Setup Wizard, click Connect to a fax
server on my network and follow the instructions for connecting to a fax
server.

Russ,

You are NOT getting a lot of points for reading and comprehension.

The OP made a request and said he was using “Win Fax for cableâ€, and further
he was getting a +1 when he dialed, and he didn’t want one. Now he has
three faxes in his queue.

I was the first to respond and carefully said there was a contradiction in
what he asked since use of “cable†implied connecting to a server, and the
+1 problem was a dial-up problem involving dialing properties. “Which one
is your problem†I asked – paraphrased.

I didn’t want to advance this any further until there was a response. Then
a direction could be established.

Then you replied that FAX is always analog and never goes over a network,
with a SA comment.

So, I explained the short history of FAX servers and how and when they were
used, since he asked by implication.

Then there was a SA comment, said I was way off topic.

I responded in kind and made more comments about the options.

Then the issue about a FAX being always analog was raised again
(incorrectly) and again it was mentioned this was off topic and I should be
more careful about reading the original question. Well, as I look back, I
did carefully read the Q and tried to quiz the OP for more details until
someone came blundering in like a bull and made an incorrect statement
confusing the whole issue, resulting in the skew in the thread.

Now, I still consider this thread was entirely ON TOPIC and it may be of
interest to the community since it appears some people didn’t know about
this capability and now can consider themselves educated.

And from now on if you want to chastise people for commenting, in line,
following a logical thread, please get your history and facts straight…go it
young man!

Bob F.

P.S. the OP never responded again. I hope he solved his problem.

You might want to read the Subject of the post next time. Then we can award
points for reading and comprehension. To what software did you think the OP
was referring if not Windows Fax and Scan? His post then made the problem
very clear. He was trying to use WFS over cable. Gee. What do you think the
problem might be? Everyone knows there are Internet Fax Services available.
That fact remains of no relevance in this thread.

B

Bob F.

Well, there's just no sense in trying to discuss this logically with you so
in the kill file you go since you make no sense! Bye.

What I wanted to know is do you still need a sever with Ultamate to send a
fax. Vista Buiness and Ultamate only have the Windows Fax and Scan.
