Win Auto Updates Greyed Out

I run Win2K Pro/SP4 on my stand-alone computer. I am
logged in as an Administrator but the automatic Windows
Update applet in the Control Panel greyed out. When I
click on it, I receive an error message that says "the
service is unavailable". Does anyone know how to fix this
without re-installing Windows? If I knew what file to look
for, I could probably copy the applet from another Windows
installation.

go to user profiles in control panel and check which group
your user is assigned to ... i was signed on with a user
with admin rights (or so i thought) but had to add my user
back to the admin group to reclaim access to the update
panel.
