I have an existing network of Win 98 computers running with the workgroup
namv of "WORKGROUP" (what else? I doubt the name makes any difference.)
When I try to configure a Win XP machine into this network, it naturally
wants to know what workgroup. When I tell it, it says "NO PERMISSION TO USE
THIS RESOURCE" and suggests contacting the network manager (me). I'm
guessing that in XP, workgroups have passwords which I do not believe exist
in 98. Any ideas about what is going on or what to do about it?

You have browser problems (and no, I'm not discussing Internet Explorer). This
is normal with LANs where you mix Windows 98 and Windows XP.

See this for how to go about Adding Windows XP to an Existing Network

The solution to this problem was interesting and didn't have anything to do
with Win itself. It was the Web Security package that came with the new
Sony. After disablint it, it all worked like one would expect, but as soon
as I re-enable anything like Mcaffee or equivalent, my network goes down
again.
