JACK

PREVIOUSLY WORKING P-4/1.6 SYSTEM WITH 393 MBYTES RAM, WIN
2K PRO
SYSTEM: SOYO P4VSA MB, 393 PC 133 RAM DIMMS, WD 60 GIG HDD-
0, WD 40 GIG HDD-1, LAN CARD, ATI RAGE AGP 128 VIDEO CARD,
430 WATT ATX POWER SUPPLY
1. Un-successful attempt to increase RAM [apparently
incompatible DIMMS]
2. Reinstalled prior DIMMS; at bios check, all OK, SOYO
P4VSA bios 2AA1 cleared and re-configured. Set bios to
stop on NO ERRORS.
3. On start-up, bios/HDD/etc all OK, WIN 2K starts its
boot with the progress (blue) stripe reaching the end
point at which time there is a click and the machine shuts
down.
4. Tried to boot from CD ROM, basically the same thing
happens.
5. Installed clean, new unformatted hard drive,
reconfigured bios to boot from CDROM, inserted the win2k
disk. Set-up files loaded. As soon as set-up began, the
machine again shuts down.
6. I am apparently in a no-"win" loop.
7. Allowing the computer to simply "run" while awaiting a
keyboard request (for example, "press any key to boot from
CD ROM) results in no problems (that is to say, checking
the SOYO voltages and temperatures, all is OK).
8. Re-installed the unformatted new hard drive and tried
installing WIN XP PRO--which I bought when I purchased the
new drives [believing it would be a better music recording
OS in this to be dedicated machine]. Same thing. Set-up
loads the set-up files, the process begins and the machine
shuts down.
All advice accepted with gratitude.

Check that your original RAM is seated properly and is working.
It could have got a static jolt while being removed (if you
did'nt use an earthing strap)
