Win 2000 hangs with error message- please help

Hello

My computer hangs when I click on an icon and I have to manually shut-down
with the PC button.
After rebooting each time, I now get a window popping up from "Service
Control
Manager" saying "At least on service or driver failed during system startup.
Use event viewer to examine the event log". I assume this is a result of the
error in the event viewer as I'll explain.
I'm using windows2000 Server.

In the event viewer I get an 'ERROR' with the following details:

Type:Error
Source:Service Control Manager
Event:7026
Description: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to
load: MFX

I have no idea what this means.
The only thing I can find that relates to 'Mfx are two files:

c:\WINNT\INF\mfx56nf.pnf
c:\WINNT\INF\mfx56nf.inf

The .PNF is raw binary, but the .INF file has text. I can't figure out what
it is for. I can produce it if someone can help, but

the first few lines are:

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
///
; EM556 Setup File
; Copyright (c) 1998 3Com Corporation
; Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corporation
; Manufacturer: 3Com
; %VER NDIS4 MFX56N5.INF V1.1.00

[Version]
LayoutFile = layout.inf
Signature = "$Windows NT$"
Provider = %MSFT%
Class = MultiFunction
ClassGUID = {4d36e971-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
DriverVer=10/19/1999,1.10.2.0
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
///

I don't have any 3Com devices (that I've installed). All devices are OK in
'Device Manager', I can use the modem as usual.

I can't run any programs.
Can anyone please help or at least suggest what to do?

brad.
