We're running Win2K on our firewall which is also our DNs server.
Quite often when I do a DNS query (local using nslookup or remote)
on an adress that I know exists I'll get a

"DNS Request timed out
timeout was 2 seconds

Run the same query again and then get an answer.

How can I adjust the timeout or figure out what is failing.
This is effecting my users as their web pages do not resolve etc.

Do you have enough resources to run both the firewall and the DNS on the
same box? 2 seconds is actually a long time for an nslookup on a short TTL
network. I'd bet that the box is too busy to respond in the appropriate
amount of time, and that when you requery you are now looking at a cached
result (because DNS finally got around to answering the question, and cached
the result for future use).

What are the client settings for DNS? What are the settings for DNS on
the two NICs in the firewall?

Cheers,
