Will xp upgrade to vista fix networking issue?

I have 2 pcs, one running vista the other xp pro. I have been through ALL
the fixes described (it's taken hours) in the newsgroups and this problem
persists: the xp machine cannot access the vista machine's files over the
network. Vista sees xp just fine. The vista machine shows in "View Workgroup
Computers" on the xp machine but trying to access files produces the
permissions error. Question: is upgrading the xp machine to vista a
guaranteed cure? I'm ready to go there because these computers need to
communicate. btw, internet connection sharing is fine.

Without upgrading to Vista XP should be able to share with Vista. Do a
simple test. Assuming you have enabled the sharing on the Vista, can you
ping the Vista by IP?

Here's something to check--literally. Go into the Vista Networking garbage
and find the Network Adapters dialog. Now open the Network adapter dialog
for the adapter you're using. Now click Properties, lower left. Be sure File
Sharing check box is checked. Let us know.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I went ahead and upgraded to vista and
all is well. I just couldn't take any more troubleshooting. :)
