Will this help improve gaming on vista?

i would just like to know, is it worth upgrading my current procesor
to improve gaming on my computer?
Im currently using

windows vista home premium 64bit
amd 64x2 3800
4 gig ram
nvidia 8800gts

Apparently my mother board does not support quad cores, so my question
is, is it worth upgrading to lets say...amd 64x2 3800, to a amd 64x2
5200? would there be much inprovement, or am i looking at the wrong
piece of hardware to change?

Hi, simple answer, yes you would see an improvement but it won't be massive

I wouldn't look too much at the AMD performance numbers as they can be
quite misleading. Look at the actual clock speed and how much L2 cache
they have. I see 5200 is 2.7GHZ with 2x512kb L2 cache. That's 512kb
for each core so it is the same as a single core with just 512kb cache
as far as most games and apps are concerened. I would go for this one
if you want to see a nice benefit.

a 2 or 3GHz processor should be sufficient try adjusting RAM to a custom
amount (Vista requires a lot)

Upgrading from the 3800 to the 5200 would bring about a minimally
substantial improvement, but i'd personally recommend to go for Intel
(either Core 2 Duo Extreme or Core 2 Quad Q6600 or above).

You won't regret it.

Oh joy, another Intel Vs. AMD thread. Haven't read one of these in a while.

Believe me, I didn't post this to instigate a flame war. Having
come from AMD and trying out the Intel Quad Core, it performs really,
really well.

I only recommended this from my positive experience. If their is an
equivalent counterpart from AMD (which performs as well) then go for
it...I have no affiliations with either company.

I know, was only joking. Personally I usually check anandtech.com or
tomshardware.com for whatever comparison they've done recently and go
that way.

I like how AMD Phenom is trying new things in the Quad Core design, but
apparently it's not quite enough to usurp Intel's Quad 2 Duo design.
Probably because Intel seems to have the smaller 45nm process down pat
now and is winning the wattage race.

I always hold out for AMDs latest offering, of the 3 systems I have
running now, 2 are AMDs (an XP and a X2), and one is Intel (Core 2 Duo).
I have 3 earlier AMD CPUs and one later Intel (Quad 2 Duo). I probably
should rebuild the older AMDs and give them to charity soon. Not enough
charity in the world I say.
