Hi,

I have spybot, hijack this, avast loaded on my compaq 2500us notebook.

I cleaned my computer of a lot of junk using ccleaner and easy cleaner.
While my notebook runs a whole lot better, i discovered 4 errors :

a)i cannot see pictures either as a slide show or as thumbnails. I have to
right click the mouse and then open with paint. windows picutre and fax
viewer gives the foll. error :

quote
rundll32.exe.- unable to locate component

This appl. faield to start because gdiplus.dll was not found . Reinstalling
the application may fix this problem.
unquote

b) Help and Support Centre icon has disappeared frm the start menu and i
cannot bring it back

c) I cannot run msconfig.exe from the start/run menu .

d) I get a windows installer dialog box when i browse some sites (not all).
I had deleted a trial version of office 2003 and dont know if this is a
consequence ?

I had done system restore but its not helped as the restore points seem to
be only from the period when the problems occurred and not earlier. I also
ran sfc / scannow ,but its not helped.

My questions :

1). Should I re-install win xp from the original cd that came with my
notebook ?
2). If I do this will I lose data in my documents folders and other programs
that I have installed ?
3). Any other solutions ?

Any and all advise welcome.
Thanks,
S

Doing a repair install will retain programs , files and settings and
hopefully get the operating system running properly. It will not find and
fix viruses and spyware , only a reformat and install will fix (delete) that
problem. Back up important files first in both cases . JJ

Before you run a re-install, is this XP Home or Pro? If Pro, did you invoke
encryption? If so, be certain to back up and verify the account
credentials.

Hi,

I use Win XP Home. I put in the XP Cd and get this message "Option to
upgrade will not be available at this time because setup is unable to load
the file D:\i386\winntupg\netupgrd.dll. System cannot find the file specified.

If i hit the ok button , the next screen only shows new installation and not
an option to repair the existing installation.

Please advise ! Thanks

1. Clean the CD - wash it with warm water and dry it thoroughly with
a clean lint free cloth or use a special CD/DVD cleaner from a
computer or audio/video store.

2. Check out the CDROM drive and see if other CDs have
errors/problems in that drive.

3. Check out the CD by trying it in another computer. If the disk
itself is damaged then you should get the same error message from the
other computer.

Good luck

Hi,

Points (a) and (d) got resolved after d/l gdiplus.dll from www.dll-files.com .
Still to figure out on the other 2. I didn't re-install XP because even
after cleaningthe cd and trying it on another machine i had the same problem
so I assume the problem lies with the Disk. How does one go about getting
another disk from Micrsoft/Compaq ?

Compaq?

That probably explains at least part of your problems. You do not
have a Windows XP Installation CD. What you have is a "System
Recovery" CD produced by Compaq, which contains a compressed disk
image of the installed system as it was at the time it was assembled
in the factory. These CDs are not capable of doing a Repair Install.
All they are designed to do is to totally wipe out the existing
install and replace it with a fresh image copy, exactly the way the
computer was when it was first purchased. All of your data would be
deleted.

Looking back over your earlier posts on this topic.

1. Re gdiplus.dll - the following download should resolve that
problem:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9C-DF12-4D41-933C-BE590FEAA05A&displaylang=en

2. Problems with Help & Support and with MSCONFIG are sometimes
associated with a virus infestation. You said you have AVAST
antivirus installed, a product that I am not too familiar with but
which is well thought of by other users. However with any antivirus
it is often helpful to get the occasional "second opinion". Go to
http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run their free online virus scan
and see if it finds something that has gotten by your Avast.

Good luck

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmenuhelp.htm helped solve the msconfig
problem but the help&support link just refuses to open up .

The CD i have says öperating system cd..microsoft xp sp1a...to be
distributed with a new hp/compaq... i assumed this meant it was a winxp cd.
If you say it isnt then how do I get one and from whom ? Surely neither HP
nor MS will provide me one because this CD says its an OS CD.
