I am uncertain about the data transfer from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003 if
and when I install 2003. I have a lot of critical contacts and appointments
that I must be sure will not be lost when I install 2003. Can anyone relate
their experiences in this regard when installing 2003.

The only problem you have is that Outlook 2003 uses a different, far more
robust format of pst file, which can also be far far larger than prior
versions before any sort of problems arise.
My advice would be to make a back up of your pst file, allow Outlook 2003 to
create a new pst file in the new format, then open the old pst in O2003 and
copy that data across to the new.
