will my computer run XP???

I just bought a refurbished dell inspiron 3700 from dell
and my processor is a 440BX AGP chipset which today is
pretty slow. I have no problems running windows SE, but
will my pentium II celeron mobile processor of only 100
MHz clock speed be able to hack it? I have 512 MB of RAM
and a 40 GB hard drive. I should have enogh memory space
but i can't be certain my processor can pick up the speed.
I asked dell about upgrading the processor and they
laughed claiming i would have to replace the whole
motherboard and with that type of process i should just
get a new notebook yeah right are they going to purchase
it for me I doubt so please if anyone can help.

Even if it will run you won't be happy with the performance. This system is
too outdated for XP. Stick with the SE.

A 100 MHz cpu is not fast enough. But when you speak of clock speed I
think you may well be confusing the clock speed of the motherboard with
that of the processor (which must *not* be confused with the system box
as a whole - it is the single cpu chip on the motherboard). The cpu
normally runs at several times that bus clock rate. You would have to
go into your BIOS setup, or manual, to find what the multiplier is -
I'd have thought a Celeron on that chipset would probably be a 500MHz (a
five times multiplier) which would be no ball of fire, but quite
adequate.
