wierd problems with Windows XP- file access.

I am having a very wierd problem.Some of my excel files which are stored on
the c drive can be seen when I drill to the folder on the c drive thro' my
computer. But when I drill to the folder by opening the Excel program and go
thro' file open I don't see the file.Also, when I open microsoft outlook and
want to insert this file as an attachment to a new message I dont see the
file.
