Wierd Network Issue

Help Please if anyone can:

I Have a home network...my main computer - Familyroom works fine with the
internet

Two of the other computers on the network have no problems whatsoever...

However, for some reason Familyroom can no longer see any of the other
computers on the network, and gets the error message that I do not have
access to MSHOME, the name of my workgroup....

Sharing is enabled...I have spent over a week trying to fix this....

With 3 Windows XP computers on the LAN, check for a browser conflict between the
computers. I"m not talking about Internet Explorer here. The browser is the
program that allows any computer to see any other computer on the LAN. On a 3
computer LAN, no more than 2 should be running as browsers.

Identify the 2 computers that stay online the most consistently, and designate
them the browsers for the LAN. Make sure the browser service is running on the
browser computers. Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify
that the Computer Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show
with Status = Started. Stop, and Disable the browser on the other computer.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Then power all back on again, one at a time.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous.

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if

If this doesn't help, provide IPConfigs for the other 2 computers, and we'll
diagnose the problem.

All systems are on XP Pro SPII and the IP config data is identical except for
the last three digits of the IP address...

....and the name of the computer

problem...

Do you get that error for all 3 computers, or just one? Did you power all
computers off after disabling the browser?

If that error is seen on just one computer, you're probably looking at a
firewall issue.

Are you using the Windows Firewall, if so is the File and Printer Sharing
exception enabled? Are you using, or have you ever had installed, a third party
firewall on any computer? What AntiVirus product do you use?

If no help yet, providing IPConfig and Browstat for all 3 computers would be a
good place to start, if you want to resolve your problem with any promptness.
