Wierd LJ1000/Microsoft Word Watermark problem

J

John Pezzano

I have an HP LaserJet 1000 and Microsoft Word 2002 on Windows XP. When I
print watermarks from Word, some of the letters are missing. Here are the
facts:

Problem duplicatable with no text - just a watermark.

If I make the watermark fully dark (undesirable), then all letters print.

If I make it somewhat dark, some letters print that dark and others print
light.

At the default setting, letters are missing. Slightly darker and different
letters are missing.

My DeskJet 5550 prints the same file fine.

Nothing on Microsoft's web site addresses this.

Nothing on HP's web site addresses this.

Latest HP driver. Latest XP (SP2 all patches). All patches for Word2002

suggestions anyone?

Hi John
I suspect it is a toner cartridge problem.
The one thing that does not make sense is-
"At the default setting, letters are missing. Slightly darker and 'different'
letters are missing".
Are you sure it is related to the actual letters of the text or could it be
related to the location on the page that the poor print occurs? If the latter
then I would be almost certain that the drum or magnetic sleeve in the
cartridge have aged. The LJ1000/1200 cartridges have a tendency to light print
especially if the cartridge has been remanufactured and the Magnetic sleeve has
not been replaced.
If you can find another cartridge to do a test then that would be the best
course of action. If a new cartridge exhibits the same problem then then maybe
the transfer charge roller in the printer needs replacing. Another possibility
is laser optics need cleaning but my first suspicion is the cartridge. Worst
case is probably the DC Controller (quite expensive!!!). Let us know how you
get on.

I have a watermark "Unofficial Copy". At normal watermark setting, it comes
out "Un fi i C p " in Arial. In New Times Roman (NTR), it comes out " n
fi a C p ". Slightly darker watermark and NTR gets the n, first f, c, a, C
and py light. With even darker watermark and NTR, the n, first f, first i,
a C and p are light. Only with black do all letters come out correctly.
Toner is original.

Note that the regular text on the page looks fine. ONLY the watermark is a
problem. If I set the page text to be as light as the watermark, the page
text looks fine. This is NOT a toner problem. Either the driver or Word is
at fault but since it works on another printer, it has to be the driver.

Its out of warranty so I'd have to pay HP for a help call. I retired from
that company. I wouldn't pay them for a call.

Anyone else have an LJ1000 that could try this?

I have a LJ1000 at work and I just printed a page full of "Unofficial Copy" at
various intensities and all worked fine.
Running Word 2003 on WinXP Pro with SP2.
Sorry can't help further.
