Widescreen resolutions in Vista?

I wasn't sure where to place this question, so please forgive me if this is
in the wrong place.

When I had XP installed, I was able to get 1440X900 (or was it 768?) on my
computer. I have an Nvidia 6800GT with a 30" Philips LCD TV for a monitor. I
can get some "odd" resolutions with the "beta 85" Vista 2 driver (from
Nvidia) but not the 1440. Does anybody know if it's a monitor problem (ie -
"generic monitor and not LCD TV" being the display causing the problem or
maybe that Nvidia didn't include it with the beta 85 driver?
I'm running it in 1024X768 and everything is stretched. It's somewhat
bothering to look at a picture and it's strateched horizontally a bit. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. :0\

Hmm, I think I found the answer to my own question. After some digging, I'm
not seeing the old 1440 as a "valid resolution" under the properties. I can
only assume that Nvidia didn't put out a "full resolution list" with this
version of the driver - so I guess it's a waiting game. *sighs*

What is this "beta 85" driver that you are talking about?

I am using the official Nvidia Vista beta drivers which are 88.61. They are
available on NVidia's site(no longer in the Beta section..go through and
choose-graphics card, windows vista and you will get them)

I have no problems driving my Dell 20' at 1680 x 1050, either off a Geforce
6600GT(x86) or Geforce 7600GT(x64)

Yup, Zapper. that is the same driver I'm talking about. On Nvidia's site,
it's called the "ForceWare Release 85" beta driver - I just shortened it to
beta 85... it's the 88.61 you were mentioning. My thing is I used to have
resolutions that I don't currently have now - so I'm wonering if it's because
it's detecting my monitor as a non-pnp monitor (I can't remember what it was
under XP) or if Nvidia didn't release some resolutions within the driver for
some reason.

Yeah, I saw that when I went to teh Nvidia site after posting but did not
want to add to the useless clutter on this poor newsgroup by saying.."I
guess we are using the same drivers and having different experiences"

Yes, if Vista sees your monitor as NON-PnP, you are hosed until Nvidia comes
out with a full featured driver which will allow you to override the "safe"
defaults. Luckily my monitor is PnP, so even though I do not have the
monitor profile that I had under XP, Vista knows what resoutions it
supports.

The standare NVIDIA drivers have an Advanced option to Show all Modes in
case they have no properly understood what your display is capable of. I
guess that you are saying that the Vista 88.91 drivers do not have this
option. I did note that the release notes list all of the nonstandard
resolutions that are supported so I suggest you read them to see if the
resolution you want to use is supported.

The 88.61 driver does not have the standard control panel, it is more or
less a basic driver to get machines up and running under Vista. Since Vista
is seeing his machine as non-PnP, it can not get the info from the monitor
as to which resolutions the monitor can support. In this instance, the OS,
limits he driver to "safe" resolutions so it does not damage the monitor or
allow a user to put it in a state that is unrecoverable..

p.s. I lied..I do not have the Nvidia 88.61 drivers that I thought I had
installed...I am using the 87.98 drivers...I guess these are the ones that
came on the DVD. I am tempted to try the 88.61's but..........if it ain't
broke....

My Dell 2405 widescreen is running as PNP generic with allowed 1920x1200
resolution on the nVidia beta 88.61 driver. You access all modes by control
panel>Personalization>Display Settings>advanced settings>adapter tab. I do
not see that mode as available with this driver yet.

Relearning like everyone how to setup Windows again -)

Have Nvidia 6600 GT with a ViewSonic VX2025 LCD.
Lost my DVI connection and analog was poor letter quality.
Found Windows choose 1600x1024 for resolution when in DVI would start
Windows and 10 seconds into showing desktop go Out of Range on me.
Changed my resolution to 1600x1200 (LCD is 1600x1050) and letter quality
much better. Later today will try the DVI connection and get back to you.
