why won't reminders work in folders other than the Inbox?

When setting a reminder, it will not work(display in reminder window) unless
it stays in the inbox. Why won't it work if I put the message into another
folder. Using Outlook 2002, and MS Exchange. Other folders are in the
Mailbox, but not a subfolder of the Inbox. Any suggestions?
