Hi Dasha,

You're actually on the wrong forum for XP, but I'll make a few comments anyway

Please confirm your system clock and Time Zone also the Date set properly,
Having it set incorrectly can cause this type of behavior.

Test this WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working and a
new Validation tool
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

Download CCleaner and Dial-ª-fix

Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com ;
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during instªll.

Do the scans with all the check marks ºn.

Run the above remover in safe mode then Ccleaner on all 3
settings(windows, apps & issues) and clear anything found reboot and see if it
still exists.

NOTE - The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep
running it back-to-back until it finds nothing. One scenario is a registry
key may only be a reference pointing to a completely different location in
the registry and when it's removed then that reference link is also noticed
as being invalid on a subsequent scan. It's generally a good idea to keep
running the Issues scan until nothing is listed.

There is also a third-party fix which has had good results for a number of
folks here:
Dial-ª--Fix
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix ;

Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mode. --it may
look as if the scan has frozen. DAF is actually doing lots of shoveling and
shuffling, so don't interrupt it.

Please read the page and Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download
Dial-ª-fix

Exit Safe Mode (Reboot)

Try the updates n0w

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut

Thanks Engel It will take me a day to try all of your solutions! A question
if I may? Can you advise me how to run in safe mode? And you said this is the
incorrect forum for XP! Can you tell me the correct one? Thanks again and I
will definatley let yo know how I went

You didn't say, or at least it's not clear, whether you tried getting the
updates using Internet Explorer, by going here:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Some new ActiveX software has to be installed on XP before your computer can
be scanned. Just follow the prompts to do so, but it should then list and
download the same updates, and install them, as those you see in the taskbar
notification. If going to the site is successful, keep going back until
there are no more critical updates to install.

Dear Dean Dean Thanks for that as you can see I am a Newbie"i am 60now and
bought my first Comp in 1998 and have used it for Word ,EMails and The net"
all self taught and I love my computor, I have gone to every site and tried
to D/load the Updates from when I shut down at nite: "Do not turn off Comp
downloading updates etc" (thats how I have accrued 85 of em) as well as the
M/S Updates site and yes I do remember D/loading some active X Stuff, so I
will also go back to Updates and try again afterb I find out and how to
"Start and then run in Safe Mode" re Engels assistance. Thank you also for
your time and effort it is greatly appreciated. Dasha

Dear Engel My deepest Gratitude goes to you! I did all youi said and it
worked I have just downloaded the whole (85) without a hitch and everything
is well! I am not sure exactly which suggestion it was but I had CCleaner and
use it all the time (on Friday) but NEVER knew about the "ISSUES scan" and
boy was there some Garbage "Shovelled" out of that lot" that also means that
all the Defragging and weekly maintnence I have been doing has not been up
to scratch! I will start reading the "README's" in future" I also beleve that
"Dialafix" played a part too as on the CC reboot it still tried to D/Load the
85 and failed also another guy called Dean Dean gave me some tip's and
correct Help Siotesto go to and I did those as well but the thing's Dean Dean
suuggested were in order but I am stil gonna thank him for his time and help!
Again Engel thank you very very much you are grately appreciated Dasha

BTW Dasha,

Thanks for posting back and thanking another very dedicated and
knowledgeable user, (Dean). That's always a nice jester when we get back a
post indicating if the suggestions were helpful or not.

A remainder, use CCleaner always (Friday ;-)) in safe mode, on this way is
safety for your PC.

Don't over use the “Issuesâ€. Is good to use it special after you uninstall a
program.

Also use the belt & suspenders before any cleaning, use a Restore Point
before the actions

Good luck

Many thanks for this question and answer. As it happens, I had the same
problem, and although CCleaner didn't resolve it, Dial-a-Fix did.

Hey Engel,
I was in the same position as Dasha, having trouble with installing updates
and I followed your advice to a tee and got success, so all I can say is
"THANK YOU", "Thank You", "Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Coincidently the last download is the one that solved the problem, for
anyone having similar problems.
Thanks again Engel.
Heres the site again for anyone having trouble:

Thanks so much. I had exactly the same problem ie unable to install new
updates after reistalling windows XP. Dial a fix run in safe mode fixed it.

I've been having essentially the same problem... unable to successfully
install updates. Running the CCleaner and rebooting as you suggested seems to
have done the trick. thanks

Hi Selenac,

You see, only with the Ccleaner you was able to fix your problem. There is
no "single" solution that fits everybody's prºblems. ;-)

Thank you for the feed back
