Why when I check file folders are there so many copies of files, sometimes
as many as 15 copies?

Depends on the files. Windows keeps backup copies of some files (for
system file checking), plus you may have the \i386 install directory, plus
the prefetch and the actual system files. Yes, it's a lot of copies.. good
thing hard drives are big these days!

Where and what files? Examples? (some xp files and folders get mirrored for
quick access and the prefetch folder will have what looks like duplicate
programs/files)

Also, very many folders will have a desktop.ini, used to tell explorer
what custom actions to use when accessing that folder
