Hi,
Evey time when my XP pro detects that there is a microsoft update it
starts having fits. it hangs up, reboots, screams, and genrally
behaves strangely. for example during this time if you open the IE7
system will crash. about 8-10 hours after this starts happening I get
the icon in the traying saying new updates are available. after I
apply the updates it works perfect till the next patch release. this
has happened to me constantly for the last 6-8 patch releases and I
could swear that something happenes to the system configuration just
before the patches are released. I have seen this over and over and
now I know I have to wait till this patch thing is over. basically the
system is unstable for about 2-3 hours. Have anybody seen this and is
there a fix? I have Symantec anti virous and Windows Defender
installed on this machine. it is an XP pro sp2. The error log does not
show anything major other than the results of the instabilities I
mentioned.

Thanks

Try turning Automatic Updates off (Start/Control Panel/Automatic Updates)
and installing the updates manually from the Windows Update site.

Sounds like you have dial-up?

There's a couple of things you could do to help alleviate your situation
(dial-up is slow and is being considered less and less as time goes on - so
the updates - they aren't small...)

- Set your Automatic Updates to "Notify me but don't automatically download
or install them".
- When notified - open Internet Explorer and visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan your computer for updates.
(*note* - the first time you visit this site - if it has been a while or
you never visited it - there will be a single install or two (possibly with
reboots) before you get to the actual updates.)
- Go through and get the updates you think you need - do not get hardware
driver updates for non-Microsoft hardware.
(Why? You get automatically notified - but manually choose when to download
and what to download and can watch the progress so you know what is going on
each step of the way.)

other option...
- Turn off Automatic updates.
- A day or so after the second Tuesday of each month, manually visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan your computer for updates.

- Go through and get the updates you think you need - do not get hardware
driver updates for non-Microsoft hardware.
(Why? You KNOW the updates happen once per month - but manually choose when
to download and what to download and can watch the progress so you know what
is going on each step of the way.)

other option...
- Get a list of hardware components in your system using something like
"Belarc Advisor" (http://www.belarc.com) and use that list...
- Get the latest hardware drivers for each hardware component straight from
the hardware manufacturer of each component and install it.
(We can help you figure this out the first time if need be.)
(Why? It could be some update needs the latest driver installed on your
system so it doesn't "hiccup" anymore.)

other option...
- Look into alternatives for dial-up. There are usually (if you have
options available) options that cost just a little more (or sometimes less)
than what you likely already pay for dial-up.
(Why? High speed Internet - with today's prices and the way large chunks of
data gets passed around - is just 'the way to go'. Otherwise things will
continue to get more and more difficult to do on the Internet at a much
faster rate than say, 5 years ago.)

Hi,
I have checked and all drivers are up to date. The automatic updates
are off (notification is on) and I am connected to cable modem. The
machine is pretty good one (2.8GHZ 1GBRAM). Any other ideas?
