Why MSN status doesn't update

Dear Jonathan,

I want to why, the MSN status doesn't update ? I am
chatting with my friend, but his status still "Away" in
my MSN. The status of my friend change to "Online" after
I close and open my MSN.
Is it a bug or what ?

Darlie,

This will occur if the person has manually set their
status. ie if you set your status to busy and have a
conversation with someone it will say you are busy, at the
top of the message window.

Hi Darlie,

It should be near-to instant, the servers automatically sound send your client the
information that your contact has changed their status (same with display name, etc.).

I've heard a few "weird" things occurring since maintenance was preformed on the servers a
few days ago -- that's why I'm wondering when exactly this problem surfaced.
