Why is word not deleting a selected portion of text when I press .

When I select a section of text in word and press backspace or start typing,
it does not delete the selected portion of text as expected, but just inserts
the typed characters before the selected portion of text, which becomes
unselected. Is there a way to fix this, or am I expecting something that
isn't supposed to happen?

In Tools > Options > Edit, make sure there's a check mark on "Typing
replaces selection".
