Why is the Solve in Excel 2007 so slow?

The solver in Excel 2007 is much slower than it was in Excel 2003. Does
anyone know what changes they made that dragged down performance? The models
are the same, because they give identical results, but the performance has
been significantly degraded.
 
I've seen several complaints in these forums about how slow different
features of Excel 2007 are compared to Excel 2003. Nobody has offered any
explanation.
