Why is Lanman Server hanging? Did he do something wrong?

Can anyone help me with this? I'm not really sure if this has anything to do
with my recent attempt to upgrade to Vista, but the problem started after I
did.

After I upgraded to Vista Home Basic, my Inspiron 700m takes about 15 to 30
minutes to load completely. The desktop appears promptly enough, but then I
have to wait forever for the programs to load. According to the "Problem
Reports and Solutions" function in Control Panel, it seems to involve the
Lanman Server, whatever that is, which is "hung" upon startup. This is what
the report says:

Description:
Service Server hung on starting.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: ServiceHang
Service Name: LanmanServer
Image Name: srvsvc.dll
Image Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Service Type: 20
Start Type: 2
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.2
Locale ID: 1033

Files that help describe the problem:
Version.txt
minidump.mdmp

I have a hunch that it has to do with some programs Vista doesn't like, but
then I don't know much about computers. I have to say, it sure gave me a hard
time with Norton Antivirus 2006; Vista and Norton just don't seem to get
along. Can anybody offer some words of wisdom?

By the way, about a week ago, before I upgraded, a blue screen with the
words "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" suddenly appeared at startup. I tried out a
solution I found on the web, which involved running the CHKDSK function using
the Windows XP Recovery Tool, and the problem was resolved. Could this have
anything to do with the current problem? Thanks.

MS Vista

No major changes since purchase other than RAM upgrade
No peripherals attached
