Why is it that ~ is not recognised when using vlookup/hlookup?

I have a huge spreadsheet with many ~ in many cells. Because of "~", I could
not use vlookup, hlookup or any search function.

Can anyone help?

To Vlookup a Tilde use:-

=VLOOKUP("~~",A1:B10,2,FALSE)

Would find a single Tilde (~) without quotes.
