Why is Insert Chart (mis)behaving this way?

Using, when I right-click on the tabs and select Insert Chart, I get a
blank chart. But just now -- and for several attempts -- Insert Chart
is creating a chart that uses several columns of data in the current
worksheet, even though they are not selected.

Why is Insert Chart (mis)behaving this way? More importantly, how can
I restore the previous behavior (a blank chart)?

I've never used this trick to insert a chart. I guess I learned first to
select a blank cell within a blank range, then press the F11 function key.

I tried your method, and since it worked as expected (blank chart), I have
no comment.
