I'm running WinXP SP3, Home Edition, Version 2002 with a Canon I850 Printer
via USB cable. Why do I have Microsoft XPS Document and Family Tree Maker
icons in Control Panel>Printers and Faxes? And how do I get rid of them or
can I? TIA.

Why do you care? Are they causing some problem?

These "printers" were installed by software that you installed on your
computer. The MS XPS Document Writer is Microsoft's attempt to compete
with Adobe's Portable Document Format (pdf) documents.

Assuming that you didn't actually install "XPS Essential Pack", you
almost certainly installed .Net Framework 3.0 (because it was pushed by
Windows Update). This is what installed the XPS Document Writer.

Similarly, you must have installed Family Tree Maker, which apparently
has its own special printer, perhaps another print-to-pdf printer.

You can probably remove either of these entries in "Printers and Faxes"
by selecting it and pressing "Delete" or by right-clicking and selecting
"Delete." But there is little reason to do so -- and you might actually
want to use them someday.

There's also an "XPS Removal Tool" available. This is provided by a
company that wants you to by *their* pdf creator product, so take it for
what it's worth. http://www.rogosoft.com/xps.html
