Why I can't open 942+ Mb photo?

Hi, I have Athlon 64, 512 Mb RAM, ATI Radeon 9000 PRO AGP, 3 Gb Virtual
memory and Windows XP Pro. I have a satellite JPEG image of 20000 x
20000 pixel x 24 bit, but I can 't open it. I also can create only 942
Mb image (or less) with any photo application. Why? How can I resolve
the problem?

I heard Windows can address 4Gb RAM only and it's set to use 2 Gb for
kernel and 2 Gb for applications, but I could write a /3Gb switch in
boot.ini.

Given that I use PC typically as workstation (one or two program at
time, not as a server). This switch increase or decrease the performance?
Thank you very much

Well, since you'll have add at least 1.5GB RAM to use that switch, I think
you'll be O.K. after that. But that switch will have no effect, so just add
the memory.

This probably has nothing to do with your hardware, and everything
to do with the software you're trying to open the image with.

What you're trying to do is NOT normal, and may require special
software. Ask whoever produced the humongus image about that.

What's the error message?

I know friends with similar hardware (512Mb RAM, etc.), Windows XP and
SAME programs. They can work on larger photos than me (2,1 Gb) and with
no problems. Why?
The error message is "insufficient memory". The same error in all
programs, and the limit (942 Mb) is identical in all programs (Paint
Shop Pro9, ACDSee7, Photoshop CS).
There's a memory utility I can use to analyze the problem?
Thank you

Maybe they're not running AMD 64's.

This could be a problem specific to this processor and/or its
motherboard implementaion. It's new, and all the bugs may
not be worked out of it yet.

Do you have another machine you can try this on?
