why have my formulas stopped working?

I currently use Excel 2003. A spreadsheet I've used for years has suddenly
had the formulas stop working and not recognizing new data. If I re-enter the
formula and try to pull it down the column, the formulas appear in the cells
but again won't recognize data.

thank you for your response. By pressing CTRL and ~, I get the actual
formulas in the cell, but it doesn't solve my problem of why the formulas no
longer recognize new data from the other cells (which make up the formula). I
also can't just re-type in the formula and drag the lower right crossbar down
the column to use the same formula for the whole column. When I click on the
cell, it will show that the formula is in the new cells, but only shows the
value from the original cell. When I enter new data, the formula cell doesn't
change at all.

I guess I misunderstood you Louis.

One other possibility I can think of is that for some reason the worksheet
is no longer automatically recalculating.

Under Tools/Options on the Calculation Tab make sure that "Automatic" is the
selected option.

Otherwise, I don't believe I can be much more help.

Tools>Options>Calculation. Set to "Automatic".

If you're wondering how it got switched to "manual"......

Excel takes the Calculation mode each session from the settings on the first
workbook opened in that session.

i.e. If you saved Book1 with calc mode in manual and opened it first, calc
mode would be in Manual.

If you saved Book2 with calc mode in auto and opened it after Book1, Book2
would be in manual mode(Excel ignores the auto calc mode in this case).

If you close Book1 before opening Book2, Book2 will be in auto calc mode.

Confusing enough? <g>
