Why don't fields update automatically when new numbers are input?.

I am new to Excel 2003 and there seems to be some setting that needs to be
turned on as I've set up a basic formulas and if the data changes nothing
updates.
 
Is calculation set to automatic? Go to the Tools menu, choose
Options, then the Calculation tab. There, ensure that
calculation is set to automatic.

It sounds like auto calculate is not enabled.

Tools -> Options -> Calculation
Make sure Automatic is selected
