Why doesn't the Word readability checker work?

I've checked all the appropriate set up boxes, but the readability checker
still fails to appear after a spell check request. Any solutions? Thanks.

There is only one 'appropriate setup box' and that is at
Word 2003 - Tools > Options > Spelling & Grammar > Show Readability
Statistics
Word 2007 - Word Options > Proofing > Show Readability Statistics
The text does have to be formatted with a proofing language for which you
have the proofing tools installed.
Press F7 to spell check and show the stats.

What version of Word? In your estimation, what constitutes "all the
appropriate set up boxes"?
