Why doesn't the result of my formula display in the cell?

Using Excel97. I am attempting to use a text string formula. The correct
result appears in the formula box, but when I choose OK, the formula itself
displays, not the result.
 
Or Tools|Options|View Tab|Uncheck formulas (near the bottom)
