Why doesn't ALT + Enter work in Excel in merged cells?

I have created an Excel 2003 document to use as a form. I have merged cells
to create the form. Now I am trying to type in information and the form will
not let me move to the next line within the merged cells to create lists,
etc. I cannot get the ALT + Enter combination to do anything. Does anyone
know how to go to the next line within a group of merged cells?

Works for me in 2003

Although I never use merged cells, I tested with merging a half dozen and
entered text with Alt + Enter and wrap text format.

Does your Alt + Enter work in a single unmerged cell?

Does the Alt key function normally in other operations like Alt + E for Edit
menu or Alt + I for Insert menu?

Hi,

AlT+Enter works.

Understand this scenario described below.

When you select a cell, by default the Wrap text, Shrink to fit and Merge
cells checks boxes are cleared under the Text Control section of the
Alignment tab in the Format Cells dialog box.

When you enter a value in the cell and press enter, you notice that the
Wrap text, Shrink to fit and Merge cells checks boxes are still cleared. If
you press the Alt+Enter, only then will the Wrapt text check box will be
selected.

However, when you merge two cells by the selecting the Merge Cells check box
under Text Control section of the Alignment in the Format Cells dialog box,
you will notice that the text does not wrap even if you press Alt+Enter. You
have to manually select the cell and select the wrap text check box under the
Text Control section in the Alignment tab in the Format Cells dialog box.
Then adjust the cell to display the content within the cell.
