Why does Word ignore your default printer?

If you open a Word document, select the print command, choose a DIFFERENT
printer (one different from your "default"), and print the document. Then,
quit Word and re-open it. Word will NOT revert back to your default printer.
It remembers the "non-default" printer you last used. I'm using Office 2003
with Windows XP Pro SP2. Excel DOES NOT behave this way.

Well, Word does. When you select a different printer, it becomes the active
one for that Word session until you change to a different one. If you want
to be able to print to a specific printer without changing the active
printer (permanently), see http://www.gmayor.com/fax_from_word.htm

Word will reset the printer to Windows default if it is closed and
re-opened. If yours is not doing this, the probability is that you are using
Word as your Outlook editor and Word is still 'open' (Press CTRL+ALT+DEL)
and see if Winword is still running.
