Why does Word either stall or close when I save?

I am using Word 2002, and more often than not, when I try to save a document,
the program either stalls or closes completely. I can usually retrieve the
document from the temporary file when I re-open the program, but not always.
I have checked for updates, and according to the MS website, my copy of the
program is up-to-date. How can I stop this from happening?

Do you have any documents where you see this behavior all the time, so that you
can do some "proper" testing? It's difficult to track down a problem if it
happens unpredictably - you can't be sure if what you're trying has had any
effect...

What I'd like to test is whether the problem goes away when you start Word in
Safe Mode, by holding down CTRL. If stops, then we know where to start looking.
