Why does Word Close?

Using Word 2002 on XP. When I have one Word document open and click on the
smaller close window box, I would expect that document to close and Word
stay open with no document open. Instead, Word closes out entirely. Why? How
do I stop this?

Attempted to replicate your problem but
failed. Word behaves as it's supposed to
on my system. Even open two docs and
closed each using the small "x" close box.
Each closed but Word remained open.
