Why does Toshiba laptop locks up intermittently?

Toshiba laptop running Vista home premium locks up intermittently. There is
no pattern. When it locks up, everything stops responding and you have to
switch off/on the laptop. Checking event viewer, you get:

The previous system shutdown at time on date was unexpected.

I think when you switch off the laptop, above entry is generated. Could not
find any other relevant entry. I have done the following:

1.ruled out over heating.
2.Ruled out start up services
3.ruled out antivirus
4.ruled out power options
5.reformated hard drive
6.passed hardware diags

Still the frustrating problem persists.

Can anyone take on this challenge by suggesting what could be causing this
problem and how can it be resolved?

I had HUGE problems with a Toshiba Satellite - so many lock ups that I took
it back to the store and exchanged it for an HP Pavilion. I tried everything
on the Toshiba and could not end the lockups and BSOD - it was unusable.

Sorry I don't have an answer, but thought I'd let you know it might be the
hardware.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite back in July 2007 for my son. if it wasn't
"locking up", it would just shut off for no reason. It's been in for repairs
more times than he's had it in his home. Toshiba replaced the motherboard;
next it was the RAM; next it was the hard drive. In point of fact, right
now it's back at Best Buy. Another motherboard has been installed. The
unit was on sale for $360. I installed another one gig of RAM, which was on
sale, also. So, $400, and Toshiba will not exchange it for another one.
They're running it through a series of tests, as I write this. It's too
bad. They're spending more on shipping charges than the unit cost!!!!

Anyway, thought I'd pass this on.

You are seeing some driver conflict. I would ask Toshiba. You have a chance
that SP1, out this week will help, but I wouldn't count on it. Go to the
site for your machine and see what they offer for Vista. A new BIOS update
would be something you should try.
