Why does this desktop resize happen?

Situation:

I use my laptop (running XP Pro) in a dock at work at 1920x1200
resolution on an external monitor. I hibernate the system while in the
dock in order to take the laptop home. Later I activate it at home at
the laptop LCD's native 1400x1050 resolution and all windows are fine.
Any maximized windows are still maximized and any non-maximized windows
either stay the same size or shrink to fit the lower resolution

The problem comes in when I hibernate at home, out of the dock, then go
back to work and insert the laptop in the dock and activate it again.
The resolution is back to 1920x1200, as it should be, but any
non-maximized windows have been resized down, apparently to fit in
640x480 resolution. All my desktop icons also get moved around to fit
in the same 640x480 space at the upper left of the screen. Apparently
while 'waking up' XP switches back to base resolution for a split second
and causes this weirdness. The odd thing is that this behavior only
happens about 75% of the time. Sometimes I will activate back in the
dock and everything will be fine.

Any ideas? Is there some setting I can change that will cause Windows
to leave my icon and window positions alone when the screen resolution
changes??

The laptop is a Dell D600 with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video adapter.

Thanks!
Rob

I'm just surprised that with all the traffic in this newsgroup
(literally thousands of posts since I made mine on Friday) someone would
have some type of answer for this question. It seems like something
that would occur pretty commonly and be almost a FAQ. Oh well... I
guess I'll just live with this Windows inconvenience. It isn't the
first or last one.

Hi, Rob

The best way - Enterra Icon Keeper Deluxe.
For different screen resolutions icons positions are stored separately
providing for optimal use of available desktop space i.e. each
resolution setting has its own set of profiles.
Icon Keeper Deluxe also provides for instant recovery of icons
positions on the desktop when they are randomly piled. When launching
full screen mode applications (games as a rule) that switch current
screen resolution at startup and restore previous resolution upon
exit. The same effect can be observed when starting Windows in the
safe mode. This trouble can not be resolved by standard tools of the
OS. Once Icon Keeper is installed the trouble disappears.

No more overloaded desktops! Find what you want to see and save your
time!
